PETER VAN BERGEN composer / musician tenorsax, a-flat / bass / contrabassclarinet, electronics Peter van Bergen was born in Tubbergen on March 13th 1957. He studied saxophone at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague with Leo van Oostrom and extended techniques with Evan Parker. He is active in contemporary composed and improvised music and has given concerts over the whole world. In 1987 he received the Dutch national Podium Prize for Jazz and Improvised music. He has been leader of the ensemble LOOS since 1982. In addition, he was the initiator behind various national and international groups and projects such as Melodies, Structures, TUMBquartet and Hackensack. As improvising musician Van Bergen has given numerous concerts, solo as well as with musicians like Cecil Taylor, Derek Bailey, Evan Parker, Anthony Braxton, William Parker, Han Bennink, Misha Mengelberg, Peter Brotzmann, Airto Lindsay, Gunther Christmann, Ikue Mori, John Zorn, Jacques Palinckx, Roscoe Mitchell, Tristan Honsinger, George Lewis, Richard Teitelbaum and Butch Morris. He was, (and is) associated with groups led by Guus Janssen, Paul Termos, Radu Malfatti, Wolfgang Fuchs and Maarten Altena. As interpreter of contemporary composed music he premiered several compositions which were especially written for him or his group LOOS by composers like Guus Janssen, Louis Andriessen, Georg Katzer, Huib Emmer, Cornelis de Bondt, Paul Termos. He performed with the ASKOensemble and Hoketus, and also participated in several modern opera (Louis Andriessen/Peter Greenaway ROSA, Guus Janssen/Friso Haverkamp NOAH) and music theatre productions with (in particular) Theatre Group Hollandia. In his capacity as a composer he has received commissions for compositions and grants from the 'Fonds voor de Scheppende Toonkunst' (a fund for composers of new music ), the Dutch radio NPS and NCRV, new music centre the Ijsbreker and the City of Amsterdam. Besides his work for LOOS he has composed pieces for, among others, De Volharding, ASKO Ensemble, Maarten Altena Ensemble and Holz fur Europa. Peter van Bergen, in his work as an organiser, has initiated and produced concerts, festivals and events in the field of contemporary music since 1988.
